Bicycle Totem in another Polish city

  • Poznań is the second Polish city (after Warsaw) with an innovative device for cyclists – a cycling totem
  • The device helps cyclists to cross smoothly and safely at intersections with traffic lights
  • The founder of the totem in Poznan is Skoda company, and the producer is Yunex

Totem for cyclists is the first in Poland and one of the first in Europe technology improving the fluidity and comfort of cycling by means of special signs with recommended riding style. The pilot totem in Poznan stood at the intersection of Bukowska and Lesnych Skrzatów streets, on Ławica. Bukowska is one of the main cycling routes in the capital of Greater Poland.

How does it work?

The radar installed on the totem measures the speed of the cyclist and sends it to the traffic light controller located 100-120m away. The controller analyses the speed, determines the possibility of crossing the intersection without stopping and sends this information back to the totem with instructions for the cyclist. Everything is done in real time. Messages are displayed in the form of one of four graphic signs:

  • “You may slow down”. – A red signal is currently being broadcast at a bicycle crossing. By maintaining speed, the cyclist will stop at the intersection. If he slows down, he will cross smoothly on a green.
  • “Maintain Speed” – A green signal is currently being broadcast at the bicycle crossing. By maintaining speed, the cyclist will cross the intersection smoothly.
  • “You may accelerate” – A green signal is currently being broadcast at the bicycle crossing. By maintaining speed, the cyclist will stop at the intersection. If he speeds up, he will cross smoothly on the green.
  • “You won’t get passed”. – Regardless of your speed, a cyclist will stop at an intersection.

Thanks to the signs displayed on the device, an oncoming cyclist knows at what speed he or she should be riding in order to continue safely and smoothly. The result should be a more efficient ride, i.e. reaching the destination both faster and with less physical effort.

Development of cooperation in Poznań

The founder and originator of the cycling totem in Poznań is Skoda, while the manufacturer of the device itself is Yunex Sp. z o.o. – the creator of the ITS system in Poznań, implemented in 2013. The traffic control system in the capital of Wielkopolska region includes priority for over 550 streetcars and buses, over 300 ANPR cameras, as well as about 140 traffic lights and over 150 passenger information boards.

After the successful implementation in Warsaw, it’s time for another city on the cycling map of Poland – Poznan, which is strongly developing its cycling infrastructure as part of a broader traffic management system in the city. We are glad, that totems can be a part of it.

said Dariusz Obcowski, the President of Yunex Sp. z o.o. – the manufacturer of totems.

Apart from Poznañ, Yunex Traffic carries out ITS projects in the biggest Polish cities – Warsaw, Cracow, Poznañ, Bia³ystok, Rzeszów and Tychy, on express roads and tunnels all over Poland and manages technical infrastructure.
